of Glocester
The town of Glocester exudes the country atmosphere.
In fact, it only has three villages, Chepachet, Harmony, and
West Glocester. Even the villages are peaceful and quiet with
little commotion and congestion. The rest of the countryside
is dotted with homes, farms, lakes and open space.
The numerous freshwater lakes add recreational opportunities,
as well as being a prime source of scenic beauty.
Townspeople take pride
in its history, including the country’s
oldest continual operating general store, the Dorr rebellion
concerning voting rights, and the site of the first bank in America
to fail.
There is a sense of
community – people tend to know lots
of citizens. In particular, families find Glocester well suited
for educating their children, participation in organized youth
sports, keeping pets, and escaping from the pollution, traffic,
and stress of city life.
There are certain
things that go hand in hand with the country life. Some services
might not be available – Glocester
has no public sewer system, no public trash collection, minimal
public transportation. Distances might seem great to stores,
and charming back roads may seem dangerous. Parents find themselves
seeking friends for their youngsters and driving children to
activities. Teenagers regret the lack of a mall in Glocester.
Yes, these are often inconveniences. The citizens of Glocester
have made a choice of lifestyle. Its not for everyone, but then
again, neither are the alternatives.
